Veterans understand just how much it means to have people you don’t even know supporting you, sending supplies, and cheering you on from afar. It was the American people who did that for them when they were serving our country and protecting our freedoms. Now, many of them have found a way to send their own messages of hope to kids that need it most through the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter.

Members of the American Legion Posts in Buford and Lawrenceville provide meals to our kids every week on Wednesdays and Weekends. They also provide us with flags to fly over our campus and lend their encouragement and support in whatever way they can. Guy Webb is our champion in Buford and Wally Cho leads the charge in Lawrenceville. Wally was a war orphan himself, so you can imagine that he has an relentless drive to constantly encourage and support kids that have lost their families. We are truly grateful for our American Legion partners and all they give to our kids.

Mr. D. Scott Hudgens was one of the most influential visionaries in our community and his support of our mission has offered great hope and promise to countless teens through the years. Scott caught our vision for the Shelter from day one. He encouraged us and challenged us to think big. It was Scott Hudgens’ gift of $750,000 in 2001 that enabled us to buy our land and build our first building that would offer a permanent home for the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter. Scott laid the foundation of hope here at the Shelter and left a legacy that would forever touch the lives of children for generations to come. In this our 25th Anniversary year we were thrilled to learn that the Hudgens Family Foundation has chosen to give to our mission once again with a generous gift of $100,000. This gift will be used specifically to fund renovations and technology enhancements on our campus.

The Gwinnett Children’s Shelter would not be what it is today without the generous heart and visionary leadership of Scott Hudgens. Though Scott has passed on, his philanthropic heart still beats strong through his foundation. It is with grateful hearts we say “thank you” to The Scott Hudgens Family Foundation for their most recent gift that helps us continue to ensure that the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter is always a place “Where Hope Lives!”

12 Stone Church’s involvement at the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter has grown over the past several years. Countless 12 Stone members, individually and in groups, have given of themselves on many fronts including serving meals, property upkeep, service projects, supply drives, mentoring, and more. They have found so many ways to apply their God-given talents and resources and are making a tremendous impact on the lives of the kids we serve. We have to admit though that their most recent gift of $30,000 in support of our operations blew us away! 12 Stone is giving back in a big way and helping show the kids we serve how much our community believes in them.

Janet Mark may be retired but she is in no way idle. This former Army Colonel left her mark this past year on the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter by logging more than 300 volunteer hours. Janet spends at least one day a week offering administrative support to our staff and throughout the holidays she was here an additional two days a week helping oversee Christmas donations for our kids. No task is too big or too small for Janet. In 2012 we’re excited to start tapping into Janet’s expertise in media relations and public affairs to help us broaden our marketing and community relations efforts. Please join us in thanking Janet for the many hours she so generously gives to the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter.
